I used to fall down rabbit holes doing research. I’d be on a roll, the words were flowing, everything was perfect, then I’d have to look something up and fall down an internet rabbit hole. Forty five minutes later, I’d finally decide that was enough research into things that really don’t matter. (As proof of this, I considered using the word obscurantia, went on an internet adventure looking it up in all its many parts and then decided I really had no business using it.)
I’ve since switched to using for things I don’t know. It has revolutionized my writing life. I don’t lose my flow and I just keep going. Plus, it’s easy enough to do a search and replace and hey, presto! everything is fixed.
The downside to this is it’s only kicking the can down the road. Revision is hard enough for me, but to have to do this kind of grunt work, too?
For most brackets, inspiration hits me out of the blue and I either scribble little notes to myself or race out of the shower in a robe and sit at my desk and start typing furiously. The Mister always laughs when this happens, but makes sure the EM doesn’t bother me until I get it all out.
Now, I’ve bracketed more in the revision I’m working on. Unfortunately, it’s the description of what one of my characters from Just for Kicks looks like. I have no idea what he looks like. My brain is delightfully vexing in so many things and this is one of them. I’m so stuck on this.
In any case, for today, my goal is to figure out what Paulie looks like. The last couple nights as I’ve been falling asleep, my mantra as I doze off is “Fall asleep and dream of Paulie.” As you can tell, this hasn’t been working.
I ran across this on Facebook probably. I’m just going to have to suck it up and figure it out.
Also, Chuck Wendig’s blog Terrible Minds is fantastic and his writing is fantastic too. I should do a review of Blackbirds. It was excellent.
